Latest updates on the Futures Conference 2026

Abstract submission for the ’Sustainability, Temporalities and Futures’ conference is ongoing actively and will be open until 2 February. Thank you all who already have submitted.

We have updated the preliminary programme for the event on the website and are also happy to announce our first keynote speakers: Welcome to Turku Professor Inger Birkeland and Associate Professor Geci Karuri-Sebina! We feel privileged to have you with us and look forward to hear your insights on the theme.

Conference fees are now also updated on the website and the registration starts in January.
Note that the early-bird fees are valid until 1 April 2026. We urge you to make your reservation for the accommodation asap as the city of Turku hosts several other events as well at the same time.

FIRST KEYNOTE SPEAKERS ANNOUNCED

Inger Birkeland is Professor of Human Geography at the University of South-Eastern Norway where she teaches nature-society relations, people-place relations, and education for sustainable development. Her research focuses on strengthening the cultural sustainability of post-industrial communities Rjukan and Notodden, and supporting the empowerment of children, youth, and civil society.

Geci Karuri-Sebina is a scholar-practitioner currently serving as an Associate Professor at the University of Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, South Africa, and the ICESCO Chair on Innovation and Futures in Africa. Her work spans the fields of anticipation, innovation and governance, grounded in her interest in the intersections between people, place, time and technological change.


Share your latest research results and findings

We invite researchers, scholars, practitioners, decision-makers and students from universities, research institutes, companies, and governmental and non-governmental organisations to share the latest research results, findings and thoughts no later than 2 February 2026.

Save the date and place: 9–10 June 2026, Turku, Finland

The conference will take place on 9–10 June 2026 onsite at the University of Turku, Finland. The registration will be open in January 2026. Full details about the registration fees, conference dinner, accommodation etc. is available on the conference website.
